Mac OS X 10.4.8 Woes

I installed the 10.4.8 delta update over the weekend and now my MBP no longer asks for a password when waking from sleep or screen saver.

Doing a quick search online suggested removing some preferences. So I removed these files:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.*

That didn’t work. I also tried Disk Utility to repair any permission issues. The scan found a few files that needed correcting but my MBP still doesn’t ask for a password. The last thing I did was reinstall the 10.4.8, this time using the Combo updater. Still not working.

It’s interesting that my G5 with the 10.4.8 delta update remembers my security preferences. Oh well.

UPDATE [Oct 29] – I give up! Too many problems with 10.4.8 (not sleeping, random crashes). The MBP is back to 10.4.7.

UPDATE [Oct 8] – I gave YASU a try and the ability to lock my MBP has partially returned. I’m now asked for a password only when waking from screensaver. Still no luck when waking from sleep. I used these options in YASU:

YASU

Wish I could help you Paul, but Mac and Windows users are like different religions passing in the night. :)

Yeah, I had that happen to me before, too. I hate to say it, but a reinstall was the quickest fix I could come up with. That or an archive-and-install.

You’ll probably need to at least log out and back in after nuking those prefs. Seems to me I found some other preferences that needed to be removed as well, but under /Library and/or /System. :-(

Tried that also… and nada. I think you’re right though, my next step will probably be an archive and install.

Hey Taylor, when are you going to get a Mac ;)

Yeah Taylor… a MAC would go very well with you MINI !!

I started having exactly this problem after upgrading my MacBook Pro to 10.4.8. Did you ever figure out how to fix it, short of an OS reinstall?

  6. Paul says:

I went back to 10.4.7 last week (MBP DVD 10.4.7 combo installer) . I had enough with 10.4.8 and actually ended up having more issues – my MBP not sleeping and random crashes. Weeks of uptime were reduced to a couple of days or less.

The only thing I miss are the improvements 10.4.8 had for MS Office.

Well, I was all set to nuke everything and reinstall 10.4.6 – I had just finished backing up all my data. I tried the YASU utility, and SUDDENLY EVEYTHING WORKS FINE! No clue why, or how, but it asks for a password on waking from sleep as well as screensaver.

    Thanks!

But I’m certainly going to be very hesitant about 10.4.9 when it comes….
