A big shout out to the Chicago MOTly Crew! I had a great time again this year.

Monday, June 25th, 2007Flexcar experience
Sunday, May 20th, 2007One really important last minute change to my schedule prevented me from driving to the Dragon with my CMMC friends. No problem. Gota have my cake and eat it too
So I booked a flight for Friday afternoon from Chicago to Atlanta and around 9pm I was in my Flexcar (a brnad new MINI Cooper Cabrio) headed for Fontana Village.
I really liked the whole Flexcar experience. After a background check, Flexcar sends you an card with an RFID chip embedded in it. It’s the key that unlocks any Flexcar!
The coolest best part about Flexcar is that gas and full insurance are included in the price of the rental. If you run below a 1/4 tank and fill it up, there is a gas card in the glove box for you to use. They’ll even deduct a small amount from your bill as because it was an inconvenience to
you
All in all, if I’m visiting a city with Flexcar, I’ll look them up first. Chances are I won’t need a call the whole time I there.
Winter shoes for the MINI
Thursday, April 12th, 2007Can you believe, it’s still snowing in Chicago. It’s April already… the Cubs should be playing!
Good thing the MINI is still wearing its winter shoes!
It’s not uncommon for Old Man Winter to dump a lot of snow on us here in Chicago. But with super efficient snow removal and the fact that I’m rarely far from home during the winter months, a set of pure snow tires (Blizzaks for instance) are probably not necessary. So after some focused research I settled on buying a set of Nokian WR in 185/65/15.
While not a real snow tire, the WR provides much better snow performance than regular all season tires. One salesperson person I spoke with said that he’s able to drive through a foot of snow in his WRs with no problem, though probably not in a MINI
At www.snowtire.info, it’s reported that the WR are “marketed as a high speed snow tire” in Europe.
So after a full winter of running on them I can say without a doubt that these are terrific tires. First off, they handle well on dry, slush and snow covered roads. At highway speeds, they’re extremely stable. Rain performance is good too. They’re also really quiet – so much so that I hear the wonderful exhaust burble all the time now. My MINI is a treat to drive in the summer and with appropriate shoes in the winter the fun continues year round.
Brrrr…
Wednesday, February 7th, 2007Fortunately the MINI has heated seats!

AutoWeek and MINI Decoder Glasses
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007MINI is at it again with their decoder ad campaign. Put those decoder glasses on and check out page 11 in the February 5 2007 issue of AutoWeek. With this ad, I think all three of my decoders have been put to use.
MINI International Magazine
Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006I received an email last week from the publisher of MINI International Magazine in Germany. They received my subscription payment! I’m all set for a two year subscription.
While not an earth shattering event, especially for those living in Europe, this wasn’t an easy magazine to subscribe to. Let me rephrase that. Subscribing was easy, sending in my payment proved otherwise. The publishers of do not accept payment via credit card. They only take transfers or bank drafts. So my eight issue subscription totaled about $60; €16 per year and $20 for the euro bank draft from my local Amex travel office.
It’s all worth it though. The magazine is a great read with terrific content and layout. Each issue also includes a CD with music and other media on it. Oh, I should mention, you can request a free copy.

Out Motoring ARC Armrest Install
Monday, September 11th, 2006I won last May during MINIs on the Dragon (MOTD) 2006. I know, that was way back in May. The important part is that it’s now installed!
The install was painless and took about 30 minutes. I probably could have installed the ARC in under 15 minutes, except that I had the factory MINI armrest to remove first. Has anyone else has gone from a factory armrest to an ARC armrest in a MINI? The instructions, by the way, were spot on!
So how’s it functioning? Absolutely perfect! After just two days I’m really regretting not having done the swap sooner. I see three big wins with having the ARC arm rest… four if you motor around in a cabrio.
- If you’re like me, you probably removed the US spec cup holder right after delivery. This leaves the rear for holding anything larger than a can of soda. Except that you can’t even do that with out raising the factory armrest upward. The ARC places the ‘hinge’ in front of the cup holder, not the other way as the factory armrest has it. This lets you put anything you want in it with out sacrificing the armrest.
- The ARC is really, really, comfortable. It’s at the right height; the factory armrest was a bit too high. And the padding is nice and soft, perfect for resting your elbow on during long trips.
- The sliding cover on my factory armrest was always loose, sliding back when setting your elbow on it. Plus the cover is easy break; I’ve had it replaced once already. There’s no sliding cover on the ARC to break.
- And last, if you have a cabrio there is no built-in storage in the ARC armrest. This is great if you want to remain open when parked.
I’m not generally one to overlook factory options. However when I buy my R56 MINI, if Aaron has an ARC armrest available, you can bet the factory version will not be on config list!
Thank you Aaron and Out Motoring!
CMMC Drive to the 2006 Micro Car National Meet
Saturday, August 12th, 2006It was nice to see everyone from the Chicago MINI Motoring Club who came out this morning for the drive over to the 2006 Micro Car National Meet being held in Crystal Lake, Illinois. After gathering at a local Dunkin Donuts we took off for a short drive down some terrific suburban twisties en route to the micro cars.
Of particular interest to me were the classic Mini’s, Fiat’s and Subaru’s on display. There were also several BMW Isetta 300’s. I have a Flickr slide show with other images if you’re interested.
MINI Takes the States Package Arrives
Thursday, August 3rd, 2006My MINI Takes the States package arrived in the mail today. Included in the package were the all important MTTS wrist bands! These wrist bands allow the wearer into MTTS actives, including (I hope!!) a once and a life time chance to take a lap around the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Day 10.
I wish I could do the whole trip, but I can’t. Instead, I’ll be traveling down to Indy with the Chicago MINI Motoring Club. There are however many MINI owners doing the full trip (lucky!!), including (to name a couple) Ian C. (GBMINI and GPMINI) and Todd from White Roof Radio. Only a few weeks remaining till the start of the road trip!!
