With more than 100 million mobile phone subscriptions in Japan, I’m always surprised by the number of pay phones throughout Tokyo. In Chicago (and probably many other parts of the US) it’s increasingly more difficult to find a pay phone.

At long last, Apple announced the iPhone! For months I’ve been tossing around the idea of buying a Nokia N80. Scratch that idea. Hello iPhone.
MacRumors.com provided great live coverage… with perhaps one exception. At 9:18 am (PST) MacRumors (erroneously?) reported, “we’re only talking about the mac today”. Two minutes later Apple’s stock dropped roughly $2, only to bounce back up when the iPhone was officially introduced. Whoops.
[Update] – From the keynote video available on iTunes, the following is what Steve Jobs said.
“So, 2007 is going to be a great year for the Mac. But this is all we’re going to talk about the Mac today. We’re going to move on to some other things and over the course of the next several months we’re going to roll out some awesome stuff for the Mac. But for today we’re going to move on.”
It’s been non stop for me. Three weeks ago, it was a bizvac to New Hampshire for MINIs On Top 2006 and a brief visit to corporate HQ. Last weekend it was a drive down to Indianapolis for the U.S. Grand Prix. And then two days later it’s off to Tokyo. Too bad my mobile phone doesn’t work here.

I had the chance to stop by the new Motorola Destination Q store on Michigan Avenue last Thursday. The first thing I realized upon reaching Destination Q was that it was being housed inside what used to be the Terra Museum. It felt really wierd walking into the what used to be the Terra. How sad.
Anyways, Destination Q certainly isn’t the Apple Store. One whole table of about 6 or so Q’s were dead and no one seemed interested in helping me find a working Q. Walk into any Apple Store and every device on display will have power and work. And, you won’t find any GSM devices here… Destination Q is more of a glorified, Q-centric, Verizon Wireless store.
Q’s exclusivity as a mobile device store on Michigan Avenue will soon end however. The Nokia Flagship Store is set to open on June 24. Now that should be worth visiting!
